The emergence of LED lighting brought a quantum leap in the development of lighting technology. In terms of energy demand this represents a clear improvement, yet when the lighting system as a whole is considered, a number of open questions remain to be investigated. This is especially true for safety-critical lighting systems, such as railway signal lights, and the glare effects of other lighting installed near them.
