Physiological effects of electric vehicles

Electric solutions are gaining ever more ground in transportation, both in rail traction and in non-rail-bound forms of transport. The use of electric power always results in the creation of electric and magnetic fields, which, above a given level, can cause serious biological effects, making it necessary to study these effects.

Two current trends can be observed in electric vehicles that are increasing the magnetic field acting on passengers: with the emergence of compact vehicles, the distance between electrical equipment and passengers keeps shrinking, and, generally speaking, the power demand of electric vehicles is increasing, which, owing to the characteristics of drive systems, results in high current while keeping the voltage low.

Physiological effects of transmission lines, health limit values

Electromagnetic environmental protection deals with the effects of electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields that arise in our environment from natural or man-made causes. These fields affect living organisms (biological effects), but individual pieces of equipment can also interfere with one another (electromagnetic compatibility = EMC).

Physiological effects of atmospheric electrical discharges

Within the subject of lightning protection, physiological effects play a non-negligible role in protecting against the harmful effects of lightning strikes. Not only a direct lightning strike, but also indirect, conducted, or inductively coupled effects can be dangerous to human life.
