ABOUT THE LABORATORY

Location

  • 01

The High Voltage Laboratory is located on the campus of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics, in a central part of Budapest.

  • 02

The laboratory's defining space is a crane-equipped hall integrated with building V1, with a usable interior floor area of 389 m² and a clear height of 16.45 m.

  • 03

The hall was designed in a way that allows the safe operation of the laboratory's highest-voltage equipment.

History

In the history of the High Voltage Laboratory, the first major piece of equipment put into use was the 250 kV transformer, which remains in use to this day, followed by the acquisition of an impulse voltage generator capable of producing a peak value of 1 MV. High-voltage live-line working appeared in Hungary in the 1970s, and at the same time the Laboratory was enriched with a 600 kV test transformer and a second, 750 kV impulse voltage generator. In the summer of 2012, the Laboratory underwent a complete renovation with industrial support, after which Hungary's largest Tesla coil was added to the row of main equipment.

The main venue of the work of the BME VET High Voltage Technology and Equipment Group is the High Voltage Laboratory belonging to building V1 of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.

Objective

Among the main goals of the High Voltage Technology and Equipment Group are both the theoretical and practical training of the future generation of power engineers and insulation technology specialists, as well as the further development of the high-voltage equipment used today, and the research and refinement of new methods that can be used in the field of high-voltage technology.
